What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy or PT, is a specialized medical treatment aimed at restoring functional movements of the body. It addresses pain, movement dysfunction, or limited mobility due to injuries or medical conditions. A physical therapist might help a runner with knee pain or work with a patient after a total knee replacement as a prescribed treatment. Serving both corrective and preventative purposes, physical therapy corrects movement imbalances and implements techniques to prevent injuries and enhance performance. Physical therapy is a non-invasive and sometimes first-line treatment that involves education, individualized care, and prescribed exercises to improve mobility, strength, and overall function. At Evolution Long Island, we offer a range of services to treat various injuries and conditions, helping patients achieve optimal recovery and long-term wellness.

How Physical Therapy Works
Physical therapy is a non-invasive treatment that can either be prescribed before or after a medical procedure (by a doctor such as an orthopedic specialist), or it may be a first-line treatment that addresses injury, pain, or some medical condition. It works by employing specific, guided exercises and range of motion or by applying manual techniques to certain areas of the body. Bands or other medical aides might also be used.
The goal of physical therapy is to restore mobility, strength, and function while avoiding injury and monitoring a patient’s progress as he or she recovers from their condition. If you come to a physical therapist after being referred by a doctor, for example, after surgery, you will meet with your physical therapist, have a consultation to understand more about your medical history and limitations, and then start a customized treatment plan.
What are the Benefits of Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is one of the most versatile treatments to not only recover from injury or illness, but to prevent and alleviate pain. Benefits include:
- Elimination or reduction of pain
- Management of heart conditions
- Can be beneficial in pregnancy and postpartum
- Helps manage injuries, such as sports injuries
- Improves overall mental health
- Can be used in place of some medications, such as pain relievers
- Can avoid surgery in some cases
- Can improve surgical outcomes
Who Should Consider Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is beneficial for many types of injury or illness, but it is also used as a preventative or as part of a rehabilitation regime for either major or minor conditions. As a non-invasive treatment, physical therapy is usually easily tolerated. You may be ready for physical therapy if:
- People who are recovering from orthopedic surgeries
- Those with chronic pain, such as arthritis
- Stroke survivors
- Athletes who want to avoid injury and reach peak performance
- Elderly people who want to work on mobility and movement
- Women who are postpartum that experience pain or weakness
- People with balance or coordination injuries
- Individuals who have been prescribed physical therapy after surgery
