What is eStim Therapy?

eStim therapy, also known as short electrical stimulation therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted electrical pulses to stimulate muscles, improve blood flow, and relieve pain. The pulses are delivered through electrode pads on the skin and mimic your body’s natural nerve signals. At Evolution Long Island, we use eStim to accelerate recovery after surgery or injury, reduce chronic pain, and retrain muscle groups.  Whether it’s TENS to calm pain or NMES to fire up weaker muscles, we tailor the treatment to your goals so you can gain strength and control of your muscles once more.

How does an eStim machine work?

An eStim machine is a therapy device that uses low-level electrical currents to stimulate nerves or muscles via electrode pads placed on the skin. The machine works by sending pulses that imitate the body’s natural signals, helping with pain management, muscle activation, and circulation. eStim machines allow for the customization of settings like intensity, frequency, and pulse duration based on the patient’s needs such as blocking pain signals or initiating muscle contractions to support strength or prevent muscle loss.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physical Therapy

eStim is safe when used correctly under the guidance of a licensed physical therapist. eStim treatments are FDA-approved and used for pain, recovery, and rehab. The treatment should be avoided over the heart, near pacemakers, on broken skin, or in areas with poor sensation. Pregnant individuals or those with medical devices should first consult with their physician or therapist before using an eStim machine. The most common side effect is usually mild, temporary skin irritation where the device touches the skin.

eStim sends electrical pulses through electrodes to stimulate nerves or muscles. It helps reduce pain, boost circulation, and trigger muscle contractions for rehab. Different settings support goals like pain relief (TENS) or muscle re-education (NMES/EMS).

There’s no difference! eStim is a shortened word for electrical stimulation therapy. Both refer to the same treatment method.

How long does an eStim therapy session last?

Not when used properly. eStim is often used to support nerve recovery, not harm it. High intensity or incorrect placement may cause discomfort or irritation but won’t lead to permanent nerve damage.

No, eStim is not generally painful, but it does sometimes come with a slight sensation. Most people feel a mild tingling or pulsing. If it feels sharp or painful, your pt can adjust the settings accordingly. Muscle-focused sessions may feel stronger but not painful.

Additionally, Mild discomfort or muscle fatigue can occur, especially during muscle-strengthening protocols like EMS or NMES, where the muscles actively contract. Pain-related protocols, like TENS, usually use lower-intensity currents and are especially well-tolerated. If discomfort is felt, adjustments by the therapist typically resolve the issue.

Yes, e-stim can help build muscle, particularly through specific types like Electrical Muscle Stimulation or Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. Estim can cause controlled muscle contractions that can increase strength, prevent atrophy, and support muscle re-education, especially after injury, surgery, or during neurological rehab.

Of course, eStim is not a substitute for exercise, but it serves more as a recovery phase and aides in the overall building of muscle in an individual.
