What are Cold Plunges?

Cold Plunges are a type of ice bath where you submerge your body, usually from the neck down, in a tub of very cold water. It’s called a plunge because it’s essentially that, a tall, deep, basin of water with just enough room for you to sit in and take a dip, though technically a winter lake or other cold body of water could do the same job. Cold plunges are popular with athletes or people who need to maximize their recovery after physical activity. It helps with muscle aches and fights inflammation.

The more effective cold plunges are a consistent temperature somewhere between 50-60°F. The shock of the cold water, even for the 1 or 2 minutes of the plunge, can improve circulation, boost mental health, and truly help you get back to working out again quickly.

How Do Cold Plunges Work?

When you immerse yourself in a cold plunge tub, your blood vessels tighten, sending blood to your core to keep you warm. This boosts circulation, reduces swelling, and helps muscles recover faster. It also triggers the release of endorphins (feel-good chemicals) and norepinephrine, which can improve mood, energy, and focus. Over time, your body gets better at handling cold, which can strengthen your immune system and metabolism.  You’ll start slow—just 30-90 seconds—and increase over time as you grow accustomed to the cold water.

FAQs About Cold Plunge

Not long – just a few minutes are the recommended guidelines.

Both of these are important for recovery and serve different purposes. Cold plunges reduce inflammation and help with muscle soreness. On the other hand, saunas increase blood flow and circulation and speed the repair of muscles. Cold plunge in particular is helpful immediately after a workout.

You don’t need to submerge your head in the cold plunge tub to gain the benefits of cold plunge, and dunking your head can be uncomfortable. For some people, it can also be unsafe in addition to the discomfort.

Cold plunges are safe, but if you have certain health conditions, you should refrain. These include people who may have heart disease, blood pressure issues, or breathing issues, like asthma. People who are pregnant and the elderly should also check first with a doctor before taking the plunge.

Going straight from a plunge into a hot shower can be a shock to your body, as can going from cold plunge to sauna. The recommendation is to dry off after taking a cold plunge and allow your body to gradually warm back up.

Cold plunge has been found to be safe and beneficial, but it should be used as recommended. This means not staying in the water too long to prevent hypothermia, or avoiding if you have a contradiction such as heart or respiratory issues. It is also worth noting that excessive use of cold plunge can cause skin damage or frostbite when taken to the extreme.
